چکیده

Since the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signal is likely to re.ect a spatial average of the activity of neurons with partly dissimilar response properties, its interpretation in terms of neuronal information processing may be di/cult. We explored this problem by means of a simple computational model based on known tuning properties of individual neurons and on the assumption that the fMRI BOLD signal is proportional to the local mean activity. We investigated the relationship between information transmitted by the population, BOLD signal and information conveyed by the BOLD signal. We found that the relationships between these variables were complex and dependent on voxel-size. c © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Functional imaging and neural information coding.

Measuring functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) responses to parametric stimulus variations in imaging experiments can elucidate how sensory information is represented in the brain. However, a potential limitation of this approach is that fMRI responses reflect only a regional average of neuronal activity. For this reason stimulus-induced changes in fMRI signal may not always reflect how...

The Benefits and implementations of Diffusion tensor imaging and Neural Fiber Tractography in Brain Surgery

Background and Aim: The methods for detecting brain activation with fMRI, MRI provides a way to measure the anatomical connections which enable lightning-fast communication among neurons that specialize in different kinds of brain functions. Diffusion tensor imaging is able to measure the direction of bundles of the axonal fibers which are all aligned. Besides mapping white matter fiber tracts,...

The physiology of developmental changes in BOLD functional imaging signals

BOLD fMRI (blood oxygenation level dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging) is increasingly used to detect developmental changes of human brain function that are hypothesized to underlie the maturation of cognitive processes. BOLD signals depend on neuronal activity increasing cerebral blood flow, and are reduced by neural oxygen consumption. Thus, developmental changes of BOLD signals ...

Neuronal population activity and functional imaging.

Human functional brain imaging detects blood flow changes that are thought to reflect the activity of neuronal populations and, thus, the responses of neurons that carry behaviourally relevant information. Since this relationship is poorly understood, we explored the link between the activity of single neurons and their neuronal population. The functional imaging results were in good agreement ...

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore brain function: cortical representations of language critical areas

Pre-operative determination of the dominant hemisphere for speech and speech associated sensory and motor regions has been of great interest for the neurological surgeons. This dilemma has been of at most importance, but difficult to achieve, requiring either invasive (Wada test) or non-invasive methods (Brain Mapping). In the present study we have employed functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging...
